Picture in Picture Workflow for 3 Channel Installation
(Use this workflow if you want to edit everything on the same timeline/preview window.)
Before you open up Premiere, create a folder where everything will live for your project! This is especially important if you are working with the class Edit Share folder or on school machines. When you are all done with the project, you can save this folder to your google drive…
1. Import the matrox_4080x768_template.psd file into Premiere.
2. Drag the matrox template into the blank timeline area. This will create a sequence with the correct 4080 x 768 pixel dimensions. Name this sequence 3-channel or something similar. This will help you distinguish your sequence from your .psd file.
3. Import your footage into the project.
4. Make a decision on how many tracks you’d like per video channel. (Some editors like to cut their video on a single track while others like to work with multiple tracks.) For the purposes of this handout I am choosing to use 2 tracks for each video channel¬–this will give me a bit of flexibility.
5. Lock the track containing your matrox template file aka V1.
6. Steps for each channel:
1. Make sure you have video tracks 2 & 3 (when you need to create additional tracks, right click between the track names and the start of the sequence)
2. Place clips onto video tracks 2 & 3
3. Click on one of the clips to select it
4. Go to the Effects Controls setting in the upper left quadrant of Premiere. Under Effect Controls/Motion, change the X position parameter to 678, the Y position should remain 384.
5. Change the Scale from 100% to 70.8%
6. In the timeline, position your playback head so that the clip registers in the Program Window above. You should see footage that has been resized and properly fits into the pink rectangle that is the left channel on the template.
6. Right click on the Motion text to open a popup menu. Select
Save as Preset and name this preset: leftchannel (italics are mine)
7. Click and drag around all of the clips that you’ve placed on V2 and V3 to select them.
8. Go to the Effects Tab on the Lower Left Quadrant in Premiere and open the Presets folder. You should see your leftchannel effect. Click and drag it over to your selected clips. This will move and resize all of your clips.
9. Lock V2 and V3 tracks so that you don’t mistakenly apply one of the other presets while you are setting up your 3 channels.
For the middle channel:
1. Make sure you have video tracks 4 & 5 (when you need to create additional tracks, right click between the track names and the start of the sequence)
2. Place clips onto video tracks 4 & 5
3. Click on one of the clips to select it
4. Go to the Effects Controls setting in the upper left quadrant of Premiere. Under Effect Controls/Motion, change the X position parameter to 2040, the Y position should remain 384.
5. Change the scale from 100% to 70.8%
6. In the timeline, position your playback head so that the clip registers in the Program Window above. You should see footage that has been resized and properly fits into the pink rectangle that is the left channel on the template.

8. Go to the Effects Tab on the Lower Left Quadrant in Premiere and open the Presets folder. You should see your middlechannel effect. Click and drag it over to your selected clips. This will move and resize all of your clips.

For the right channel:
1. Make sure you have video tracks 6 & 7 (when you need to create additional tracks, right click between the track names and the start of the sequence)
2. Place clips onto video tracks 6 & 7
3. Click on one of the clips to select it
4. Go to the Effects Controls setting in the upper left quadrant of Premiere. Under Effect Controls/Motion, change the X position parameter to 3403, the Y position should remain 384.
5. Change the scale from 100% to 70.8%
6. In the timeline, position your playback head so that the clip registers in the Program Window above. You should see footage that has been resized and properly fits into the pink rectangle that is the left channel on the template.

Save as Preset and name this preset: right channel (italics are mine…)
7. Click and drag around all of the clips that you’ve placed on V4 and V5 to select them.
8. Go to the Effects Tab on the Lower Left Quadrant in Premiere and open the Presets folder. You should see your rightchannel effect. Click and drag it over to your selected clips. This will move and resize all of your clips.
9. Lock V6 and V7 so that you don’t mistakenly apply one of the other presets while you are setting up your 3 channels.
10. Once you are finished you can lock/unlock tracks as you see fit. I suggest locking them anytime you apply the channel presets to a bunch of clips!
11. At the end, when you export your file, choose ProRes422LT and make sure that you keep the sequence settings (size and frame rate). We will output your files in class if you want to wait before exporting.
